Cisco Bug: CSCvf59313 - PLATFORM-4-ELEMENT_WARNING messages are confusing in multi-processor systems

Last Modified

Nov 08, 2020

Products (1)

  • Cisco 2600 Series Multiservice Platforms

Known Affected Releases

Denali-16.3.3 Everest-16.6.1

Description (partial)

Symptom:
When an IOS-XE routing or switching platform reports that a particular element - such as CPU/memory utilization - has exceeded a threshold, it will produce a PLATFORM-4-ELEMENT_WARNING syslog message.

In certain hardware configurations, the messages do not make it immediately obvious where the problem actually exists. As an example, the following message is output from a Catalyst 3850 switch stack running 16.3.3:

Jun 14 06:53:14: %PLATFORM-4-ELEMENT_WARNING:Switch 2 R0/0: smand: 1/RP/0: Used Memory value 91% exceeds warning level 90%

In this switch stack, switch 2 is the master. This message should be interpreted as "The master switch 2 reports that memory on switch 1 exceeds the warning level". This is not obvious at first glance, however.

This enhancement is filed to improve the wording of the above messages to more efficiently provide the data most relevant to the reported problem.

Conditions:
N/A - this is a serviceability enhancement.
