Description (partial)

Symptom:
Sometimes on boot using a UCS C240 host and VMWare ESX 5.5, the following kernel panic happens immediately on the system startup

Intel machine check architecture supported.
Intel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#1.
CPU1: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 0 @ 2.70GHz stepping 07
Total of 2 processors activated (36970.49 BogoMIPS).
ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs
..TIMER: vector=0x31 pin1=2 pin2=0
..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
...trying to set up timer (IRQ0) through the 8259A ...
..... (found pin 0) ... failed.
...trying to set up timer as Virtual Wire IRQ... failed.
...trying to set up timer as ExtINT IRQ... failed :(.
Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!  Boot with apic=debug
and send a report.  Then try booting with the 'noapic' option

Conditions:
Running a SocialMiner on a VM in ESX 5.5 on a UCS C240 series host.
