Cisco Bug: CSCul38998 - Document information about VMFS-5 and block size

Last Modified

Products (1)

  • Cisco Unified MeetingPlace

Known Affected Releases

8.5

Description (partial)

Symptom:
In the installation guide for MeetingPlace 8.5, for Installing VMware ESXi under step 9 it says to select the block size of 8 MB:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/meetingplace/8_5/english/administration/inst_vm.html#wp1076884

Step 9 Add this data store a second time, to maximize the block size and enable the largest capacity per logical drive.
 e. Select the maximum block size (8 MB).

However now MeetingPlace 8.5 supports VMware ESXi Release 5.0 and 5.0 Update 1 for upgrades and new installations. By default with ESXi 5.0, it uses VMFS-5 which does not allow the use of 8 MB block sizes for new datastores.

VMware Configuration Maximums is documented here:
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r50/vsphere-50-configuration-maximums.pdf

Block size is by default set to 1 MB and cannot be set to 8 MB unless VMFS-3 is chosen.

When creating a new datastore with VMFS-5, there is no configuration setting to change the block size at all.
