Symptom: IBM ServeRAID defunct drive messages seen in system syslog file. This only occurs on 7835-I2 and 7845-I2 servers. syslog shows message: At Sat Dec 19 18:54:10 EST 2009 on node 10.163.222.250, the following HardwareFailure events generated: hwStringMatch - Director Agent: IBMPSG_ServeRAIDDefunctDriveFRU CMA01 Defunct drive: controller 1, WWN 0000000000000000. Sev: 6. hwStringMatch - Director Agent: IBMPSG_ServeRAIDLogicalDriveOffLine CMA01 Logical drive is offline: controller 1, logical drive 2 ("Drive 2"). Sev: 6. or similar. Controller, logical drive numbers may vary. Conditions: Under normal operations IBM Director Agent reports a drive to be defunct and logical drive to be offline. A bit later, the IBM Director Agent reports logical drive to be in normal state again. This may be seen intermittent, sometimes a few times a day, sometimes once every week or month.
