Description (partial)

Symptom:
write operations to the bootflash: file system on an MDS 9124 fail because the bootflash: file system is read only. this condition may be confirmed by any of the following methods.

console bootup logs contain the following message:

  Checking all filesystems....r.ERROR: bootflash: has unrecoverable error; please
  do "format bootflash:"

syslog contains messages such as:

  %KERN-2-SYSTEM_MSG: EXT3-fs error (device hda4): ext3_readdir: bad entry in directory #11:
  rec_len %% 4 != 0 - offset=0, inode=4294967295, rec_len=65535, name_len=255 - kernel

  %KERN-2-SYSTEM_MSG: Remounting filesystem read-only -kernel

errors will also occur when trying to write to the bootflash: file system such as:

  switch# copy tftp://1.2.3.4/testfile bootflash:
  /bin/copy: cannot create regular file `/bootflash/testfile': Read-only file system.

Conditions:
this issue only occurs on MDS 9124 systems released in 2009.

Will format bootflash require the switch to go offline
I have an MDS9124 that I cannot copy a license file to because it returns "Read-Only Filesystem".  I have been recommended to format bootflash.  I need to know if that action will take the switch offline or reboot it so I can request an outage if necessary.  Thanks for any help you can provide.
