Description (partial)

On XR12k router running XR381 image and configured with various QoS/ACL/Accounting which occupies most of the available harware sources for feature processing, following error message may appear on the console for Engine-3 type of linecards when Lawful Intercept feature is first applied on the router:

#<LC location>: <date> : hfa_main[56]: %L2-PRECAM-2-HW-RESOURCE-FAILURE: Failed to allocate hardware resources for feature MPLS_LAWINT_PJOB on <.....>

If this error is seen, then Lawful Intercept feature will not work on those linecards of the router.

This error condition may happen depending on combinations of various QoS, ACL, Netflow/Accounting features for IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS protocols present on the router and Lawful Intercept feature is first configured on the router. Before LI is applied, existing scaled feature configurations on the router already may allocate/consume most of the available hardware feature resources on Engine-3 linecards. A heutistic algorithm is used to best utilize available hardware resources by optimizing sharing of the resources across various features with common attributes. When Lawful Intercept feature is first applied on the router, this heuristic algorithm fails to find additional available resources needed to implement this feature, then it reports the above error condition.

After this "hardware resource allocation failure error" is reported, the heuristic algorithm tries to reallocate existing features by compacting the allocation and freeing up some entries at the end of the list. Because of this, when lawful intercept feature is reapplied on the router, no error message is seen and LI feature gets applied successful on previously affected linecards.

This error condition happens only on Engine-3 type of XR12k linecards.
